Bowling to help the Vermont Foodbank

BENNINGTON -- A local business is offering free bowling Saturday to help the Vermont Food Bank increase its food stock and raise money.
Bennington Lanes will open its doors -- and all of its lanes -- to the public for at least two hours. Those looking to bowl a free game simply need to donate five nonperishable food items or $6, all of which will go straight to the Vermont Food Bank, according to Brooke Thomson, who manages the local bowling alley on behalf of her family.
Thomson said she has read several articles about the increased need among Vermonters for the food bank's services. "They are saying that Vermont is the 6th hungriest state in the country," she said. The food bank says it can feed a family of four on $6 per days, Thomson said.
"One of the reasons why I really wanted to do it is because there are so many people in the area right now with the economy that really need help," Thomson said. "Everyone will be paying it forward."
Each family or group will be able to bowl for one hour between noon and 1 p.m. and 1 p.m. and 2 p.m The bowling alley is not taking reservations, so securing a lane will be done on a first come, first served basis, Thomson said. However, she pledged to extend the hours if necessary to offer free bowling to anyone who shows up with a donation.
"I want them to enjoy their time and actually get to bowl a game with their family," she said.
Thomson said she is hoping to collect at 2,000 food items in addition to cash donations. She said signs have been posted around to advertise the event.
"I really wanted to do something for the community," Thomson said. "The community has been very good to our businesses, and we would just like to reciprocate."
The Vermont Food Bank recently opened a new 21,000-square-foot facility in Brattleboro in addition to the program's main warehouse in South Barre. The southern Vermont location is intended to allow for easier delivery to the 50 agencies the served in Windham, Windsor and Bennington counties.
