Crop Walk Talk

BARRE TOWN - Rev. David Vanderlinde-Abernathy of the Barre Congregational Church put one foot in front of the other while hiking a 1,000-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail between Georgia and West Virginia this summer.

However, we're told the good reverend has a little more walking to do as part of his grant-funded sabbatical and he'd love some company this weekend.

On Sunday at 1 p.m. Vanderlinde-Abernathy will lead the Barre Area CROP Hunger Walk - a multi-denominational endeavor organizers hope will help change the world in real and measurable ways. The walk, which is open to all, will begin at the Barre Town Middle and Elementary School and will feature a stroll along the nearby bike path and a trip past the Vermont Foodbank, which will be the local recipient of 25 percent of what is raised by the CROP walk.

Sponsored by several area churches, including Vanderlinde-Abernathy's, the CROP walk will also raise money that will assist people around the globe in a broad range of ways. Some could be spent digging wells that will bring clean water to impoverished villages, or providing seeds and tools so that people can grow their own food.

Whether it's responding to devastating floods across the central U.S., or helping to construct a sand dam in Kenya, local organizers say CROP Hunger Walks make a difference. Folks who can spare a few hours to walk a few miles on Sunday are urged to bring their families, friends, or just themselves to the town's centralized elementary school on Sunday at 1 p.m. If you can't walk, we're told there are plenty of people looking for sponsors, and donations will be accepted at the school on Sunday.

For more information, contact Nancy Fowler at the Barre Congregational Church at 476-3065 or fowler5vt@myfairpoint.net, or visit http://www.cropwalk.org/.
